Travel Secret #1025: High Line Park, Manhattan, USA

Times Square, Central Park, Statue of Liberty. I’m sure you’ve struck them off your list. An elevated park in the heart of Manhattan? Bet you didn’t know about it. The High Line Park is unlike your regular urban parks. Situated at a height of 25 ft, its fascinating history and architectural mastery make it a sight worth visiting.

A part of the West Line, the High Line was an elevated railway track used to ship freight cars into the warehouses. It went out off use in 1930, and in more recent times this forgotten relic became a threat to Chelsea’s vibrant character. For much of the 1990s, New York’s mayor, Rudy Giuliani tried to have it removed from the neighbourhood. Almost a decade later, in 1999, it was saved from demolition, by Friends of the High Line, a non-profit group of community residents, who sought to restore and transform the historic structure.

In its place today we have an innovative public space which stretches from Gansevoort in the meatpacking district, till 34th street. Offering a panoramic view of the city’s hustle bustle and the Hudson River, the High Line is New York’s perfect spot for lounging around on a bright sunny day.
