Exotic. Extravagant. Essential. See This Museum Before You Die.

Travel Secret #351
By Shubhra Krishan

I’m not a “museum person,” and this piece by my favourite travel writer Anthony Peregrine really speaks to me! But if there’s one museum I would visit again and 39 times again, it would have to be the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

Designed in the Neoclassical style, the Egyptian Museum boasts 107 halls filled with artefacts dating from the prehistoric through the Roman periods. It houses approximately 160,000 objects covering 5,000 years of Egypt’s past.

I can never forget the Egyptian queen’s bed, covered in a heavy sheet of gold,  with its legs shaped like the fore and hind legs of a lion.  My guide told me that silver being more expensive in those days featured only in the linings of furniture, while the more affordable gold took centrestage! Lasting impression:  Tutankhamun’s inner coffin made from 22-carat beaten gold.

Each figurine, statuette, pillar, plate, cabinet, jewel box, golden slippers held me  captive with its craftsmanship and grandeur.

And The Mummy Room…I wasn’t sure how I would react to the sight of them, and even when I saw them, I wasn’t sure how I felt…those bandaged bodies, that matted hair, and the bared teeth…it’s definitely the kind of place you should mark on your list of things to see before you die.

And speaking of mummies, those crocodiles were a jaw-dropping sight indeed!

P.S.:  I had a crammed itinerary, otherwise I would have kept at least two days to admire and enjoy this huge and utterly fascinating museum.
