Travel Secret #3049: South Point Mall, Gurgaon

Picture this: You drive into the musty basement parking of a rather unappealing little mall located by a dusty old road. You take the lift, and step into a splash of sunshine.

South Point Mall (you probably haven’t even heard of it) is a sunlit surprise of a shopping place. Small but packed with interesting stores and cafes, it is a delight for discerning shoppers.

Every café here has a personality, reflecting the owners’ love of creativity and class. A sprinkling of stores that house clothes, home décor accessories and kitchen knick-knacks…prepare to spend at least half a day inside this Ali Baba’s cave of treasures.

Let’s take a quick tour of the Mall:

BIZIBEAN

As we walked out of the elevator on the ground floor, our eyes caught this open café buzzing with a Bizi staff waiting on the moderately Bizi crowd of customers.

CAFE AMARETTO

We stumbled upon this cool, sophisticated café on the ground floor. The owner, Anasha Shayal, invited us in for coffee. A spunky young woman, she is an art dealer as well. All the paintings on the cafe walls are for sale. Despite no background in the hotel industry, Anasha has created a slice of Italy in the heart of a Gurgaon mall. Stucco walls, shapely olive oil bottles and textured paper mats; it’s easy to imagine you’re sitting somewhere in a Mediterranean cafe as you sip your cuppa.

THE WISHING CHAIR

We spent hours in this store stocking up things for our new office space (we have just redecorated. Visit us!). Verdict: if you’re looking to spice up your home or workplace, you better not miss this shop.
Moving around the neighbouring shops, we also discovered that this mall mostly caters to the niche home décor market.

I SAY ORGANIC

I Say Organic sells certified organic produce. Beautifully designed and well stocked, this is definitely one of the most attractive places to buy organic food in Delhi.

Epicure Food & Wine

This is a Food & Wine shop with an exclusive line of wines, cheeses, deli-meats and local handcrafted French inspired delicacies. (They didn’t let us in because of our cameras! A little rude, don’t you think?)

QUILL AND CANVAS

Just when we thought we are through with exploring, our photographer Anisha discovered this place in a rather hidden corner of the building – the extreme right wing of the 3rd floor. We entered this art-gallery cum bookstore owned by Shobha Sengupta, an author, ex-journalist and art dealer. The main draw of her shop was the interesting partition that separates the bookstore from the gallery, lit by the most beautiful natural sunlight from a giant window at the back. You can hang around while sipping coffee while you read the books and enjoy the art.

On the first floor, CCDS, India’s largest kitchenware and cake decorating store, invites you in with its gleaming display of bakeware. To our great surprise and delight, they conduct baking classes year-round. Check out their website to get details.

Gurgaon has a large South-East Asian population, especially Japanese and Korean. That’s probably why the mall has two Japanese restaurants and a Korean Department store called ‘Seela Food Mart.’
