Kuchen is a traditional German pastry that roughly translates to “cake.” The only difference between this and cakes as we traditionally know them, is that a kuchen is less sweet and usually filled with fruit, custard and whipped cream. It is typically enjoyed with coffee. Ask a German about the “Kaffee and Kuchen” ritual and watch their eyes light up!
There are about as many different recipes and styles of kuchen as there are people who make it. Oh, and it’s pronounced koo-ken.
